Fresh reports out of Apple’s supply chain indicate that iPhone 6 production for the most of June and July had hit a snag as backlight – a critical component of a smartphone’s display – was sent back to drawing board.
According to people aware of the situation, Apple had been wanting to design a single layer backlight instead of a double layered one in a bid to keep the display assembly thin to target a thinner iPhone.
However, this didn’t go as per planned and the single layer backlight didn’t prove to be bright enough to fulfill Apple’s satisfaction. This forced Apple to recall the backlight to the drawing board for a dual-layer design resulting into a complete halt in the display assembly production line.

Supply chain sources have revealed to Reuters that the issue has been resolved and production is back on track, but suppliers are scrambling and trying to make up for the lost time.

There is no indication whether the near two month delay will force Apple to delay the launch or if there will be limited supply initially. Apple has scheduled a press event on September 9 and it is believed that Cupertino will be unveiling two iPhone 6 versions – one with a 4.7-inch display and other with 5.5-inch.

Other specifications have also been rumoured including a sapphire glass display, A8 processor, higher amount of RAM, fingerprint scanner among other things.
