A recent report suggests that Microsoft could soon unveil its next major computer operating system iteration, expected to be named as Windows 9, as early as next month.
According to the Verge report, citing unnamed sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, the software giant is all set to unveil the operating system, codenamed Threshold, at a special press event scheduled on September 30.
Although it’s not yet confirmed whether the new operating system will be christened as Windows 9, it’s likely that Microsoft will continue the trend of maintaining the numbering scheme with the next platform as well.
The new report falls in line with another report which claimed Microsoft is planning to launch a “technology preview” of Threshold as early as late September or October. As per the report, users who wish to install the Windows 9 preview version will reportedly receive automatic regular monthly updates for the operating system.
As when Threshold arrives it is likely to include a number of new features including the start menu that was unavailable on Windows 8; windowed Metro-Style applications; virtual desktops, which will let users run applications in different areas of their desktops; integration of Windows’ virtual personal assistant Cortana as well as elimination of the Charms bar that debuted as part of Windows 8.
Furthermore, Redmond claims Windows 9 will be an all-in-one OS compatible with all devices including smartphones, tablets, personal computers and video-game consoles. The final public release is expected to be scheduled for April 2015.
