FreeBSD Foundation has announced the release of FreeBSD 9.2 today after a string of delays and a couple of extra RC releases.
Originally scheduled for an August 31 release, FreeBSD 9.2 is not as major a release as compared to the FreeBSD 10.0 which is slated for a 2014, but it does have its fair share of enhancements. Primary among these enhancements are TRIM for SSD support in ZFS file-system as well as support for LZ4 transparent file-system compression; and inclusion of VirtIO drivers in AMD64 generic kernel configuration.
Some components in FreeBSD 9.2 have been upgraded including DTrace to version 1.9.0; Sendmail to 8.14.7; OpenSSH to 6.2p2; and OpenSSL to version 0.9.8y. You can find the release announcement here.
FreeBSD 10.0 is the next major release that is likely to hit in November, but as far as the Foundation’s reputation goes, our bets are on a 2014 release. We would like to acknowledge that it will be worth the wait as FreeBSD 10 brings in a lot of enhancements, features and improvements. Some of the features of include support for Bhyve hypervisor support, AMD kernel Mode-setting, improved 802.11n networking stack, LLVM’s Clang as default compiler, and Intel’s “Bull Mountain” RDRAND CPU instruction set among others.
