Windows Phone 8.1 update 1 developer preview has been released as we reported earlier, but it seems that those owning a HTC Windows Phone device are out of luck for now as a bug is preventing them from downloading the update and applying it.
The GDR1 or General Distribution Release 1 brings with it the much awaited Cortana in new regions including new features such as Live Folders, improvement to IE11, SMS merge and forward among other things.
Lumia owners shouldn’t have an issue downloading the update if they already had a Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview installed on their handsets, but “HTC is one type of device that requires a mobile operator or manufacturer updates before receiving the newest update. This is due to an identified problem that could potentially cause serious problems with the pone (sic)”, notes Microsoft Forums moderator Shawna V in response to queries on why the update 1 wasn’t downloading on HTC devices.
There are cases wherein HTC device owners are able to download the update, but the installation doesn’t proceed and gives an “8018830F” error.
Microsoft Windows Phone team head Joe Belfiore has also acknowledged the issue with HTC devices. “If you hit the update error, it’s unlikely that retrying will work. We thing it’s related to low system storage. Give us some time”, Belfiore tweeted.
Microsoft is currently gathering more information about the issue and details about affected devices and if you are one of those affected, you can submit you complaint here.
