Apple’s flagship iPhone 6 has had a lot of buzz in the past few months, with several rumours about the launch date, display, design, and the latest bullet point adding to the list is the dramatically improved 13-megapixel camera.
Digi-Wo, a Chinese forum, with a great track record of Sony-related rumours, has reported that the upcoming smartphone will pack Sony’s Exmor IMX220 which boasts a 13-megapixel camera and 1/2.3-inch sensor – capable of 1080p video recording support (3,840 x 1,080 resolution), marking a significant upgrade from the 8-megapixel shooter in iPhone 5S.
Sony’s 13-megapixel camera is rumoured to be incorporated only in the larger phablet – 5.5-inch version of iPhone 6, which is reportedly facing production issues. iPhone 6 4.7-inch variant is expected to feature the same 8-megapixel camera with improved camera lens.
Interestingly, Sony’s latest flagship Xperia Z3, slated for a September release is also expected to pack the Exmor IMX220 sensor with a 20-megapixel camera.
The Digi-Wo report contradicts the previous rumours about Cupertino retaining the 8-megapixel f/2.0 snapper and improvising it for the upcoming iPhone 6.
Rumours have it that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will have a wide aperture and Optical Image stabilisation (OIS) technology incorporated for camera-related improvements. OIS technology is known for reducing blur and any kind of camera shake to give better quality photos.
As of now, what is clear is that iPhone 6 camera is expected to be better than the 8-megapixel shooter in iPhone 5S.
Apple is yet to comment on the report, so it’s better to take the news of 13-megapixel camera with a pinch of salt.
