Google on Monday announced that it is soon going to pull back its popular productivity app “Quickoffice” from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s iTunes App Store as it has already integrated Quickoffice into its Google Docs, Sheets and Slides apps.
“With the integration of Quickoffice into the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides apps, the Quickoffice app will be unpublished from Google Play and the App Store in the coming weeks,” wrote Google in a blog post.
The company said that existing users will be able to use the app, however, no support or new updates can be expected. New users will not be able to install the app.
Google acquired QuickOffice back in June 2012. Using Quickoffice suite apps users could view, edit and create Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, and store them on Google Drive.
After a few months, the app’s iPad version was made free for ‘Google Apps for Business’ customers. Later, in September 2013, the same was offered free for both Android and iOS users.
It seems like after the launch of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides standalone apps, for both Android and iOS, essentially offering all the editing features as Quickoffice, Google feels the app has become obsolete. Although no fixed date for the removal has been announced, the company has said the app will be removed from the app stores in the coming few weeks.
