Google, on Monday, rolled out a Chrome Remote Desktop app for iOS, which will let users access their PC, Mac or Chromebook computer remotely with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Launch of the iOS Chrome Remote Desktop app version follows release of its Android counterpart in April 2014.
“Chrome Remote Desktop allows you to remotely access one computer from another over the Internet. For example, you can use the app to securely access your files or applications from another computer. Or you can give a friend temporary access to your desktop so they can help you solve a computer problem,” Google explains.
In order to access a PC or Mac remotely with the new app, users need to first install the Chrome Remote Desktop software from the Chrome Web Store on their computer. Once it is set up on the computer, the Chrome Remote Desktop Web app will display a 16-digit code. Users will then need to enter this code in the iOS or Android app on a device logged into their Google account to gain remote access to their computer.
Google has recommended users to protect the remote computer or mobile device on which the app is running with a PIN to provide an extra level of security on top of their existing Google account password.
“When you use the app to share your computer with someone, that person will see your email address and have full control of your computer, including access to your applications, files, emails, documents, and history. Share with caution,” Google warns on its Chrome Remote Desktop app support page.
Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, the Chrome Remote Desktop app supports iOS 7.0 or later. The app is optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.
The free 9MB Chrome Remote Desktop app is currently available for download from the iOS App Store.
