After almost one year of acquiring wildly popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp, Facebook has reportedly begun testing WhatsApp integration into its ‘Facebook for Android’ app.
According to a report on the Geek Time, Facebook has added a “Send” button with the familiar greyish WhatsApp App icon featuring next to a post along with the like and share buttons. The new button appears on the right side (for left-to-right languages) for some users in the most recent version of the Facebook for Android app.
It is expected that the new feature will let users send images, videos and much more content via Facebook’s Android app to their friends, through WhatsApp.
The move represents the first step towards connecting the two platforms. There are even reports that both the Facebook and WhatsApp teams have already begun working on a deeper integration that will include the ability to send messages between Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
WhatsApp, which has over 700 monthly active users, was acquired by Facebook for over $20 billion in February last year. Facebook Messenger currently has more than 600 monthly active users.
It isn’t clear if and when Facebook will roll out the new feature.
