Activision’s Destiny has a whopping 9.5 million registered users, the company’s latest earnings report reveals and to add to that success tale, company’s CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that they are already working on Destiny 2.
In a post-earnings financial call, Hirshberg said “Work has also begun on future expansion packs, as well as on our next full game release.”
This may come out as a disappointment for users who were under the impression that Destiny will be an ever-evolving title with new enhancements and features added to the game by its developers. That assumption may be correct to a certain extent as the company has already promised expansion packs for Destiny, but if we go by other information provided by the company, a multi-year franchise is the road ahead.
Activision has been regularly saying that they have got a 10-year vision Destiny and contract deals between Activision and Bungie reveal a multi-sequel plan for Destiny. Further, Activision has also revealed that Bungie has a Lord of the Rings-sized narrative in mind for the Destiny.
In the earnings report, Activision has claimed that Destiny is the “largest new franchise launch in history” and one of the 10 largest game launches “ever in the US”.
As far as other games are concerned, Activision revealed that Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft players exceeded 20 million registered users life-to-date and World of Warcraft saw a quarterly increase in subscribers to 7.4 million.
