The US federal government has crowned Google’s Chrome as the most popular web browser in the US based on the data from its Digital Analytics Program (DAP) over the course of last 90 days and 1.39-billion web visits to more than 37 government agencies.
Chrome is pegged to be the leader with 34.7 per cent share while Internet Explorer comes in at second with 28.3 per cent share, Apple’s Safari is placed third with 20.3 percent while Mozilla’s Firefox came in at fourth place with 11 percent.
The data provided by DAP has also segmented visits by IE version – IE 11 (14.8 per cent), IE 9 (5.5 per cent), IE 8.0 (3.3 per cent), IE 10 (3 per cent), and IE 7 (1.7 per cent).
One of the main reasons why Safari managed to rank ahead of Firefox is that the federal government’s DAP doesn’t distinguish between desktop and mobile-based browsers.
If we go by visits based on the type of devices – desktops rule the chart with 67.5 per cent share while 24.9 per cent visits came from a smartphone followed by 7.6 per cent from a tablet.
These numbers don’t agree with data provided by NetMarketShare, which says that during the same period Internet Explorer is the top browser followed by Chrome, Firefox and Safari. StatCounter on the other hand pegs Chrome as a clear leader followed by Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.
Agreed, Chrome is best, IE11 is a disaster and should be replaced long before Microsoft releases a new browser otherwise the customer base is going to turn into lemmings.
Internet Explorer is already being replaced – Microsoft are bringing out a new browser for Windows 10 called Spartan, although most of the time I tend to use Chrome for my browser, it’s only sometimes when I’m fixing customers PC’s and they are insistent on using IE that I have to use IE, but from a web developers perspective IE is an absolute nightmare. Design an amazing website, looks amazing, acts amazing, works amazing, load up on IE – oh no what happened!!
Now Chrome is a memory hog.
