ARM acquires two US startups – ‘Wicentric’ and ‘Sunrise Micro Devices’

ARM on Thursday announced it has acquired two US startups Wicentric and Sunrise Micro Devices in a bid to boost its presence in the Internet of Things arena.

Wicentric is a privately held company that focuses on the development of low-power wireless products. These include Bluetooth protocol stack and profiles for creating interoperable smart products, and the link layer for silicon integration.

SMD is also privately held and provides radio IP solutions including a pre-qualified, self-contained radio block and related firmware to simplify radio deployment.

ARM said the intellectual property of both companies will be merged to form the ARM Cordio portfolio. This portfolio will boost company’s existing processor and physical IP targeting end markets requiring low-power wireless communications such as the Internet of Things (IoT). The portfolio is available now for immediate licensing.

Terms of the acquisition agreements have not been disclosed.

The acquisitions follow the purchase of Dutch embedded security software vendor Offspark and embedded Web connectivity software provider Sensinode.
