Apple’s updated App Store Distribution page shows its mobile operating system iOS 8 is currently running on 68 per cent of active iOS devices.

According to the updated pie chart iOS 8’s predecessor, iOS 7, is now running on 29 per cent of devices, and earlier versions of iOS are now running on just 4 per cent. The new stats show the percentage of iOS devices recorded at the App Store on January 5, Monday.

Adoption of iOS 8 was initially slower than iOS 7; however, it has been increasing steadily. Released in September, Apple’s iOS 8 OS was reported to have been running on 46 per cent of devices in initial few weeks of its release.

However, in October, the OS adoption had virtually halted at 47 per cent, following the botched iOS 8.0.1 update that accidentally disabled cellular connectivity and Touch ID operation on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets. The Cupertino tried to fix all the flaws with the latest iOS 8.1.1 update. Apple’s last iOS adoption data was from November 2014, which showed 60 percent of devices had upgraded to iOS 8.

Success of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is one of the main reasons why the newest iOS is rapidly growing. The devices have done immensely well in most of the markets with record breaking sales.
