Crytek offering CryEngine development engine on $9.90 monthly subscription
Crytek has launched its subscription based CryEngine game development engine and interested developers can subscribe through Valve’s Steam service at $9.90 a month.
“Crytek’s award-winning CRYENGINE software launched exclusively on the Steam Store today, enabling developers everywhere to gain royalty-free access to all of its groundbreaking features on a subscription basis”, announced Crytek in a news release.
Developers can also avail other subscription – a three month plan will cost $18 ($9 a month) and a six month plan will cost around $50 ($8.33 a month).
So what do subscribers get in return? Subscribers will receive full access to the engine as well as immediate updates via Steam’s automatic update service. Further, developers will not be required to pay any royalties on their commercial games; however, certain elements of CryEngine will require separate licenses for commercial projects.
“By ruling out royalties we are aiming to make CRYENGINE the best choice for everyone, and hope its arrival on Steam will empower developers of all sizes to achieve their creative visions”, said Carl Jones, Crytek’s Director of Business Development.
Subscribers will also access to the powerful renderer behind Crytek’s Xbox One title “Ryse: Son of Rome”, C++ and LULA API interfaces, demo levels and assets for different types of games, extensive programming API documentation, multiple tutorials by CryEngine professionals and opportunity to be a part of CryEngine community.
If you don’t want to opt for a subscription right away, you can always get your hands dirty with CryEngine SDK, which is already available for free. However, if in case you want to receive updates including new features, you will have to subscribe through Steam.
